Father, Grant Fox, was the main goalkicker for the New Zealand national rugby team (commonly known as the All Blacks) from 1985-1993. Grant helped the All Blacks win the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987, and was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

Grandfather, Merv Wallace (the father of Ryan's mother, Adele), was a renowned New Zealand cricketer who later coached the national team. Wallace passed away in 2008 at 91 years old, with one obituary calling him "one of the best batsmen New Zealand has ever produced."
